IKEA Doubles Down on Smart Home Tech with Full Matter Support

IKEA isn’t just about flat-pack furniture and Swedish meatballs anymore. Over the past few years, the company has quietly built a lineup of smart home products—though with names that still sound distinctly Scandinavian. Now, IKEA is taking its smart home ambitions even further by fully embracing Matter, the universal smart home standard.

This move is a big deal because Matter solves one of the biggest headaches in smart home tech: compatibility. Instead of dealing with a mess of different ecosystems (like Zigbee, Z-Wave, or proprietary apps), Matter acts as a common language for smart devices—similar to how USB works for electronics. With Matter, IKEA’s products will seamlessly work with other brands, making setup and control much easier.

IKEA’s Matter Expansion: Over 20 New Devices Coming Soon

Currently, IKEA sells smart bulbs, light switches, motorized blinds, and air purifiers, but none of them support Matter—yet. That’s about to change. The company’s Dirigera smart hub, which already connects IKEA’s devices, will soon get a Matter update, allowing it to bridge IKEA’s ecosystem with other Matter-compatible gadgets.

But the bigger news? IKEA plans to launch more than 20 new smart home products in January, all with built-in Matter support. While the company hasn’t revealed specifics, we can expect expanded options in lighting, sensors, and possibly even smart plugs.

New Bluetooth Speakers: Retro Style and Mood Lighting

IKEA isn’t stopping at smart home gadgets. The company is also stepping up its audio game with two new Bluetooth speakers.

1. Nattbad Speaker ($49.99) – Available now, this speaker has a vintage radio design and comes in black, pink, or yellow. It supports Bluetooth (10m range), Spotify Tap, and multi-speaker pairing.

2. Blompräkt Speaker (Coming October 2024) – This model doubles as an ambient light, available in beige, black, or blue. Like the Nattbad, it supports Spotify Tap and multi-speaker setups.

Why This Matters for U.S. Shoppers

For American consumers, IKEA’s push into Matter-compatible smart home tech means:

Easier setup – No more juggling multiple apps or hubs.

Better compatibility – Works with Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and more.

Affordable options – IKEA’s products are usually budget-friendly compared to competitors.

With these updates, IKEA is positioning itself as a major player in the smart home market—not just a furniture store with a few tech gadgets on the side. Keep an eye out for their Matter-ready lineup in early 2025.
