Google Maps Live View Brings Your Trip to Your Lock Screen

This could be one of the most useful navigation features yet, and many might find it even better than the current picture-in-picture mode.

Google Maps is becoming more deeply integrated with Android 16. Select Pixel and Samsung users have started seeing real-time navigation alerts appear directly on their lock screen, status bar, and Always-On Display. A persistent progress bar shows you how much of your trip is complete, meaning you no longer need to open the app to check your status.

Although the feature is still in a limited testing phase, Google is expected to release it more broadly with the upcoming Android 16 QPR1 update. If you don’t want to wait, you can try joining the Google Maps beta program to get early access.

Never Miss a Turn with Smarter Alerts

This new Live View feature brings navigation out of the app and onto the most visible parts of your phone—right where you naturally look. As soon as you begin navigation, Android generates a clean, glanceable card that displays your next instruction, like “Turn right on Main St,” along with your estimated arrival time and a prominent color-coded progress bar.

This bar is animated, giving you a quick visual sense of how far you’ve gone and how much is left. It stays pinned to your lock screen, status bar, Always-On Display, and notification panel, so it’s always visible and doesn’t get hidden by other alerts.

Previously, Google Maps used a picture-in-picture (PiP) overlay that floated above other apps. While functional, it had downsides: it was fairly small, blocked part of the screen, and still required tapping if you wanted more detail.

Live View, on the other hand, is designed to surface time-sensitive information proactively. It ensures your directions are always in sight—so you won’t miss a turn because a text message or music notification pushed your navigation out of view.

Although Maps is the perfect use case, this Android feature is built for any app that provides real-time progress updates—think food delivery trackers, Uber arrivals, or package shipping statuses.

Android 16 Update Availability

Samsung began rolling out Android 16 with One UI 8 to Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 users in July 2025. Its beta program started with the Galaxy S25 series in May, expanded to the S24, and has now reached older models including the S23, A36, A35, A55, and A54. The full public release is anticipated for late September 2025.

Google’s recently launched Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL come with Android 16 QPR1 pre-installed. These devices shipped with the August 2025 security patch, but some users are now receiving a minor September update (build BD3A.250721.001.B7).
